how big an impact does my modem have on speed

I have a real cheap modem that verizon gave me when i signed up for there 14.99 DSL and I was wondering If I bought saw a hundred dollar modem...would it make a dramatic difference in my computers download speed?

Even the cheapest DSL modems can handle speeds much higher than you're being sold - so I doubt a better modem would give you better speeds.

Try running a benchmark speed test http://www.dslreports.com/stest

Your ISP caps your speed - but you should be close to what they are selling you (Verizon has different speed packages so I won't speculate)

Good luck. You can always try searching "Verizon DSL tweak" or something in google as well and you'll be given a lot of good tips on how to get the best speed posssible.

I have speeds in the bottom 12% or so but I think its due to the fact that I have the 14.99 verizon deal.

I didnt know how much the modem comes into play with regard to speed.

Yeah - for $14.99 you're basically looking at maybe 3-4x the speed of good dialup without the pain of having to dial in. Next time they have a promotion see if they'll ramp you up for 60 days to "test drive" a higher speed for free (they often will) :)
